Pie Recipes

Research indicates that Pie Recipes were originally the creation of the Ancient Greeks and became highly popular with the Romans, who introduced them to many parts of the world, during their invasions and occupancy of other countries. Baked within a pastry crust, there are numerous Pie Recipes for a variety of ingredients, savoury or sweet, which is why it is believed that the word itself is derived from a shortened version of "Magpie", a bird noted for collecting various different kinds of objects. The pastry not only seals in the juices and flavours of the contents, but also helps to preserve the ingredients to a certain extent, which means that pie recipes are invaluable as dishes which can be prepared beforehand and either eaten cold or warmed up later as required. The original Pie Recipes differed according to status and it is believed that the term: "Humble Pie" is a derivative of the word: "umbles" meaning entrails, as the poorer classes could not afford the more expensive meats.
